UK Wild Otter Trust: The Famous Wimborne Otter

Monday 6th January, 7pm

A native otter turned up, but with a difference... it had entangled itself with some plastic cable ties.

The UK Wild Otter Trust was alerted and sent one of the team to Wimborne to investigate what was going on. The decision was taken to attempt the humane capture of this stricken animal, with a view to releasing it from the ties that were effectively acting as a snare. The UK Wild Otter Trust are the only people in the UK legally allowed to trap the Eurasian otter, under strict licence from Natural England, and set about the capture after much planning - trapping otters can be difficult at the best of times and to trap one on a river is, and would prove to be, extremely difficult given the behaviour and habitat this particular otter was frequenting.

The teams were deployed with traps and Dave Webb, the Founder of UKWOT, also attended with a view to trap. Little were they aware that several hundred man hours of time, planning, movements and methods would need to be employed. UKWOT have dealt with a similar case in Blandford and the otter there did manage to free itself of the cable ties; it's likely the Wimborne otter may have done the same but there has been no activity from this particular animal for several weeks. Dave says this is not a bad sign and could be positive in that they've not had one reported dead or with cable ties attached, as the rescue attempts were unsuccessful on this occasion. Now, Dave has agreed to come back to the Allendale Centre to give a presentation on his work, the otter cub rehabilitations they do, the behaviour and ecology of the otter and of course, to talk about the famous Wimborne otter. Entry by generous donation. Reserve your seat here.
